Number Talk

Throughout my internship, my coop teacher was working closely with a math consultant to incorporate 5 minutes a day at the beginning of each math class where we did mental math with the students. This allowed the students to work on their basic math skills 5 minutes a day without relying on pushing buttons and the help of a calculator.

This was a great way to get the students to think and work on their basic math skills instead of always relying on the calculator to give them the answers and not know why that is the answer. The students start to understand why and how to come up the answer on their own.
