This week I can say I have learned a couple more words in which I can add to my list of words that I already know. Some words I learned this week include: Au, Friend, Heart, and Faith. Not only have I been learning a few words each time I attempt this learning project but I have also found that by reading how to say the different characters and phrases, I also learned how to better pronounce different words that I haven’t been pronouncing exactly correct! I find some of the ways to say/pronounce the words to be really neat. So not only have I been learning how to read and write different Chinese Characters but throughout this process I have also learned how to pronounce different words. So its a bonus to my learning project that even though I am learning very few words I have learned how to properly pronounce and say different things in which I haven’t been doing so as I just recently learned. So after all this work I have already put into this learning project, I think I am going to stick with this project and not attempt a different one. I have put in lots of time for this project and think it would be a waste to change it now.

I haven’t had much time to work on my learning project lately due to all my midterms and homework that is starting to pile up on me. But the good news is I have learned more words from where I last was! I now also know how to recognize the words: a lot, big, little/small, cheap, and mouth. I realize that I am only learning a couple of words each time but that is all I have been able to manage to do lately. I still haven’t found a site or resource that could better help me with my learning project. I call my mom and ask for help in learning how to accomplish my learning project, but since my mom isn’t that good at english to begin with she doesn’t really know how to help me that well. Also due to the fact that my mother hasn’t read or wrote chinese in about 20 years she, herself, is having difficulties trying to remember how to do it herself. So I haven’t had the greatest luck trying to rely on my mom to help me, so I often ask my cousins and family in Vancouver. They have helped me a bit in the way that they have helped me learn some of the words that I already have, tell me what words to try and learn, and which ones are easiest to try and recognize. So I have to thank my mom and family for all the time that they have put into trying to help me learn this project.

As much grief as this learning project is causing me I am still learning some things from it, so that is good. Even though I am not learning as much as any of my classmates are I still find it a good thing to be able to try and read/write chinese to at least help me in some way for the future. I find that I spend hours at a time staring at a blank page and accomplishing nothing because I still haven’t exactly found out how the easiest way for me to learn chinese is. So I am going day by day slowly trying to teach myself these different characters. I find that all the hours I put into trying to learn these characters isn’t good enough because I spend hours at a time trying to learn only a few characters. I have not been able to accomplish much in the sense that I haven’t learned a lot but I am still learning slowly which is all that matters to me. So not only is it hard for me to learn how to read these characters but it is kind of difficult for me to blog about what I am learning when I am learning very little at a very slow pace.

So far for my learning project I have been having a lot of difficulty trying to learn how to read any words. I find that the characters are too complicated for me to be able to find to recognize and memorize them. So I have only learned a couple of different words so far such as love, person, fire, and water. While learning how to recognize these words I have been finding that my numbers have been a lot better in the sense that I can recognize them quite easily now for the majority of them. It is just the odd ones such as 100, 1000, and 10000 and so on that I still am having a little bit of difficulty learning. I am not accomplishing much through this learning project but I am still learning things just at a slower rate.

Learning Project Ideas and Advice November 2, 2011

So I have been thinking that I am going to do a different Learning Project. I was thinking maybe trying to accomplish playing a PS3 game such as Fifa 12 or Madden so I at least have a chance when I play against my brother. My current learning project which is learning how to read/write chinese has been really really hard I found. I don’t know what I can do in order to be able to recognize and tell apart the different characters. I have been learning pretty much nothing to the point that I don’t even want to put up my last progressions about me trying to learn these new things because I have honestly gotten no where. So by me writing about learning nothing is pointless. So I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what it is I should change my learning project to or how it is I would be able to accomplish more of what it is I am doing now. But I will when I get to it finish posting everything that I have done on my learning project so far even though I have taken at times 3 hours where I just sat there trying to tell the difference between different characters and memorizing them. So technically by me sitting there for 3 hours staring at a page and accomplishing nothing my learning project has been a total fail. So I’m just asking for some advice or different ideas that I can and should try and do! Thanks.

Today I learned that all the numbers from 1-100 are all pretty well follow one another. SO if you know the numbers 1-10 you can also go to 99 because all the numbers you just add the multiple of 10 to it. For example 52 would be 5×10+2. So you don’t need to know any other numbers. But 100,1000, 10000 and so on, however, you do need to know them because they don’t relate to just the numbers 1 through 10. But I still have some trouble with the multiple of 10 numbers. I find trying to read the complex characters to be very difficult. The numbers aren’t as complex and relate to one another in some way.

So today I started my learning project which includes trying to learn how to read chinese. So far I have got the numbers 1-10 down pat and the two words “love and person”, but I can’t write these two words very well. I found the word “love” pretty easy to recognize because of the fact that you always see people with either a tattoo or necklace with the character love on it.

So for my learning project I have decided that I’m going to learn how to read Chinese. I already know how to speak Cantonese, I can speak it semi fluently but not the greatest. However, I can have conversations with my mom, and I can speak Cantonese better than French, and I have my grade 12 French. Where as I never went to any classes for chinese I just learned through the family. I kind of had to in order to talk to my grandparents. So I think it would be neat to be able to read even a little bit of Chinese because my friends always ask me, “What does this say?”. I also think it would be a good idea to be able to read and write Cantonese and not just speaking it. So for now my goal is to be able to read something if not nothing, and if I catch on quite easily I would also like to learn how to write chinese. In order to learn this I am going to use youtube, books, blogs, and the internet. My mom, however, doesn’t remember how to read and write as well so I can’t go to her for help. She also lives 5 and a half hours away. 😦
