Today was my last day for my field placement at Deshaye School. It was such an amazing experience to have. I had so much fun with all the students, I got to teach the students how to read, spell and do math. I got to work with the EFAP students as well and they are amazing students. Today we actually got to play tag with the EFAP students, and they all thought it would be a good idea to pick me and tag most of the game. So I was busy trying to run away from all the students. It was really fun while it lasted. Through this experience it has really opened my eyes and has broaden my view on becoming a teacher. I has not only made me think twice about if I actually want to be a teacher but my decision on going into the Education Program has definitely grown from this experience. I am going to miss all the students and teachers at Deshaye School. Although today was a fun day with the students it was always really devastating to know that it was my last day.

Yesterday I took my day off and drove to North Battleford to watch the High School girls from Meadow Lake play their first game this season. The girls lost a bunch of their starters from last year so this first tournament was all about trying out who played well with who. So although the first game didn’t end up how the girls would have liked it was a good way of experiencing for the team. They lost their first game 50-32 but ended up winning their second game today which was good. Not only was it good to watch the girls play basketball again, it was good to be with the girls again and see the coaches again. Watching the girls play this weekend brought back some good memories, I miss high school basketball and sports so much! I miss being able to enjoy playing the sports I love, being with the girls, and being able to travel every weekend. But in all it was a good trip down to battleford to see everyone again. I showed up unexpected like I usually do, so when the girls first seen me walk into the gym they all got really excited because I haven’t seen some of those girls in 5 months. I love surprising the girls, it is definitely well worth the trip!

Tech Task #9 -Smartboards November 16, 2011

So just recently I got an amazing presentation and introduction to Smartboards. I learned so much about smartboards, and found that they can indeed come in handy! Not only will they help in the future for teaching but it also makes things less boring when it comes to learning. I found that Smartboards could come really handy for me to create more understanding and less boring activities as a high school Mathematics teacher. I looked at Outcome P20.8 of the Saskatchewan Curriculum. This outcome deals with Pre-Calculus 20 and understanding quadratic equations. Some websites that I found that would be useful in teaching this with Smartboards include:
Using the Quadratic Equation
Quadratic Formula
Graphing Quadratic Equations
These activities introduce the students to the quadratic formula, how to use the formula and last but not least how to graph the quadratic formula. I think that it is a good idea to teach students using a Smartboard because it involves everyone in the learning area such as how some students are visual learners and others are hands on learners. So the Smartboard technique will involve both of these because not only will it show the students how to do what it is they are learning but they will also get the opportunity to go up and try doing the questions themselves. The Smartboard would come in handy when dealing with graphing quadratic equations because that is best learned visually. This way you can see how they graph and how the equation should look at the end. Smartboards can not only get students to be active during Math Class but any class the Smartboard can be applied to everyones learning.

This weekend I went to Prince Albert to watch my hometown high school girls Volleyball play at Regionals. Not only did I get to see my old teammates but I went to P.A with my friends that I graduated with that I haven’t seen in a while. The 5 of us girls took one vehicle and stayed the night in Prince Albert to watch the girls play on Saturday. The volleyball girls did amazing, including the upset they made in the bronze game against Prince Albert Carlton in which Meadow Lake beat in the 3rd set. This will be the first time in 9 years that Prince Albert Carlton has not made it to Provincials. The games this weekend were all really close and really good games. Next weekend the girls will be going to Moose Jaw for Provincials! I had an amazing weekend watching some good Volleyball, being with my friends again and seeing my friends from the team. This weekend was well deserved and definitely worth the 16 hours of driving. I am glad I went to Prince Albert this past weekend and enjoyed myself for once since University has started. Staying in my dorm room all the time gets old and boring quite fast.

Learning Project- November 2nd, 2011 November 9, 2011

This week I can say I have learned a couple more words in which I can add to my list of words that I already know. Some words I learned this week include: Au, Friend, Heart, and Faith. Not only have I been learning a few words each time I attempt this learning project but I have also found that by reading how to say the different characters and phrases, I also learned how to better pronounce different words that I haven’t been pronouncing exactly correct! I find some of the ways to say/pronounce the words to be really neat. So not only have I been learning how to read and write different Chinese Characters but throughout this process I have also learned how to pronounce different words. So its a bonus to my learning project that even though I am learning very few words I have learned how to properly pronounce and say different things in which I haven’t been doing so as I just recently learned. So after all this work I have already put into this learning project, I think I am going to stick with this project and not attempt a different one. I have put in lots of time for this project and think it would be a waste to change it now.

I haven’t had much time to work on my learning project lately due to all my midterms and homework that is starting to pile up on me. But the good news is I have learned more words from where I last was! I now also know how to recognize the words: a lot, big, little/small, cheap, and mouth. I realize that I am only learning a couple of words each time but that is all I have been able to manage to do lately. I still haven’t found a site or resource that could better help me with my learning project. I call my mom and ask for help in learning how to accomplish my learning project, but since my mom isn’t that good at english to begin with she doesn’t really know how to help me that well. Also due to the fact that my mother hasn’t read or wrote chinese in about 20 years she, herself, is having difficulties trying to remember how to do it herself. So I haven’t had the greatest luck trying to rely on my mom to help me, so I often ask my cousins and family in Vancouver. They have helped me a bit in the way that they have helped me learn some of the words that I already have, tell me what words to try and learn, and which ones are easiest to try and recognize. So I have to thank my mom and family for all the time that they have put into trying to help me learn this project.

As much grief as this learning project is causing me I am still learning some things from it, so that is good. Even though I am not learning as much as any of my classmates are I still find it a good thing to be able to try and read/write chinese to at least help me in some way for the future. I find that I spend hours at a time staring at a blank page and accomplishing nothing because I still haven’t exactly found out how the easiest way for me to learn chinese is. So I am going day by day slowly trying to teach myself these different characters. I find that all the hours I put into trying to learn these characters isn’t good enough because I spend hours at a time trying to learn only a few characters. I have not been able to accomplish much in the sense that I haven’t learned a lot but I am still learning slowly which is all that matters to me. So not only is it hard for me to learn how to read these characters but it is kind of difficult for me to blog about what I am learning when I am learning very little at a very slow pace.

So far for my learning project I have been having a lot of difficulty trying to learn how to read any words. I find that the characters are too complicated for me to be able to find to recognize and memorize them. So I have only learned a couple of different words so far such as love, person, fire, and water. While learning how to recognize these words I have been finding that my numbers have been a lot better in the sense that I can recognize them quite easily now for the majority of them. It is just the odd ones such as 100, 1000, and 10000 and so on that I still am having a little bit of difficulty learning. I am not accomplishing much through this learning project but I am still learning things just at a slower rate.

So for Tech Task #8 I chose to add Twitter onto the widgets of my blog because that was the only thing I have from the list that we were given. The only reason I got Twitter was because of ECMP 355, but I would have to say I am getting the hang of Twitter and I am glad I created an account. I’m slowly learning each and every day different things about Twitter and its great and amazing how many things you can do. I am actually starting to use Twitter more than I do Facebook. Its a great inventions I would just have to say and a great way to interact with different people around the world.

So my team had our first indoor soccer game on Friday, November 4th. Unfortunately we lost but it was still really fun. We are just getting the hang of playing as a team, where everyone needs to be on the court and what needs to be done. So even though we lost it was still a good first experience playing as a team. Considering the fact that we are in the highest league and all but 2 of the 10 girls have played soccer before I’d say we did really good. I found that I need to start working out and staying in shape. I was so out of shape it was ridiculous. I couldn’t even run the court 3 times without gasping for breathe. That just shows how much I am out of shape and need to start running again. But anyways the first game was fun, I miss playing all the sports I use to be involved in during high school, meeting the people on my team has been great as well. So in all I am really glad I decided to join my brothers soccer team! 🙂
